ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

Are you in the mood for a romantic story? Do you love the Beatles’ songs? Well, you can kill two birds with one stone by watching Across the Universe, a romantic musical drama directed by the Oscar-winner Julie Taymor in 2007, which is a perfect mix of passionate love and superb soundtrack, all based on the music of the Fab Four.
The story is set in the 1960s and is about a young British worker, Jude, who sets off for America in search of his father. What he actually finds in the USA is a new world where he can experience true love with Lucy, a well-off college student. He also widens his horizons of art and music and deals with the controversial issue of the Vietnam War and the pacifist movement.
The main actors, Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood, respectively in the role of Jude and Lucy, are not only excellent in their acting roles but are also great singers of the Beatles’ songs, which accompany the scenes and help develop the plot of the film. Moreover, the director is able to create powerful and colourful images and skilfully link them with the music so that to reflect the intensity of the characters’ feelings and to convey the complexity of that period of American history.
I must tell you the truth: I have already seen it hundred times but, once in a while, I still crave for its beautiful scenes and find myself humming its tunes. So, whether you like it or not, once you decide to watch it you will become addicted!
